3/20 Coalition To Host Events In Honor Of Osaze Osagie
Update, March 17: According to the 3/20 Coalition, the protest scheduled for Saturday, March 23 has been cancelled due to “unforeseen circumstances.”
Original Story: Next week, State College’s 3/20 Coalition will host several events to honor the life of Osaze Osagie, who was fatally shot five years ago by State College Police.
The 3/20 Coalition was formed following the shooting with the goal of preventing further police brutality events and fighting for justice for Osagie.
The week’s events are held in partnership with People’s Defense Front, Central PA Trans Alliance, Centre County DSA, Centre County for Change, United Socialists at Penn State, Student Youth Committee, Penn State Students for Justice in Palestine, and the Student Committee for Defense and Solidarity.
The week will kick off at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, at the MLK Plaza downtown with a “Remembering Osaze Gathering.” The event will serve as a way for community members to carry on the memory of Osagie following his death.
At 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, at Sidney Friedman Park, the organization will hold a “Five Years, Still No Justice” protest. The officer who fatally shot Osagie was cleared of any wrongdoing by an internal investigation, causing community members to continue to seek justice.
Later, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, the inaugural Osaze Osagie Memorial Lecture will be held at the Hintz Family Alumni Center. Savita Iyer-Ahrestani, the senior editor of the Penn Stater magazine, will lead a dialogue with Sybrina Fulton. Fulton is a racial justice activist and the mother of Trayvon Martin, whose death in 2012 served as a catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Due to limited space, attendees are asked to register in advance.
