Penn State Student Farm Club Launches ‘Salad Club’
The Penn State Student Farm Club and the Sustainable Food Systems Network (SFNS) are launching the first-ever “Salad Club” in April.
The membership-based club aims to increase accessibility to sustainable, local vegetables on campus, and students can purchase a three-week membership plan to receive greens and vegetables to construct personal salads.
“The goal of Salad Club is to increase student access to locally and sustainably grown, affordable produce on campus,” Student Farm Executive Director Vancie Peacock said. “Salads are an accessible way for students to consume vegetables, as they can be created without a kitchen or advanced cooking skills. The educational content that comes with membership will give students fun salad-making skills for the rest of their lives!”
Each salad share will be composed of greens, video content, and cooking suggestions, and the first share will include salad-making supplies like a cutting board, knife, and salad spinner. The one-time cost is $41, and SFNS will support 25 memberships.
Additionally, five spots will be reserved for students with food insecurity for a decreased $5 cost.
Those who sign up for the three-week membership will receive the produce each Thursday on April 4, 11, and 18.
“Salad Club is a wonderful way to introduce students to the concept of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, bring locally grown produce to campus, and increase student access to affordable food,” Peacock said. “I can’t wait to see all the different salads everyone makes with their share each week!”
