Your Guide to UPUA Election Day 2024

UPUA elections are right around the corner, folks.

Polls open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, and Penn State students can vote for their next student government leaders and representatives online throughout the day. Voting will close at 9 p.m.

For the first time in three years, the executive ticket will include two pairings of candidates for president and vice president of the assembly. The remaining candidates on the ballot are contending for spots as at-large representatives, academic college representatives, or Faculty Senate representatives.

Executive Ticket

Roman Bahadursingh & Jackson Carmichael

Roman Bahadursingh and Jackson Carmichael are one of the two pairs of candidates contending for student body president and vice president this year. Bahadursingh previously served as UPUA’s Movin’ On liaison in the 18th assembly, while Carmichael has no previous experience within the UPUA.

The duo’s platform focuses on internal reform and developing a greater connection between the UPUA and Penn State students. If elected, they hope to be transparent in their leadership and open to inquiries from all students.

Zion Sykes & Rasha Elwakil

Zion Sykes and Rasha Elwakil are also vying for the roles of student body president and vice president. In the 18th assembly, Sykes served as the chair of the governmental affairs committee and Elwakil served as the chair of the justice and equity committee.

The pair’s platform centers on advocacy, sustainability, DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging), and affordability. Their main goals include increasing election knowledge and working toward more sustainable infrastructure.

$15 Minimum Wage Referendum Question

All undergraduate students who vote, regardless of academic college affiliation, will be asked if they support a campus-wide minimum wage of $15. This will not immediately cause a $15 minimum wage to go into effect, but the data is valuable for the UPUA to report to the university administration.
