Onward State’s 2023-24 Graphics Graveyard

Rest in peace to these graphics.

With Penn State baseball’s ninth-inning loss to Nebraska in the Big Ten Championship game, Penn State’s 2023-24 athletic year is officially over.

As the year goes on, our graphic designers often prepare graphics for significant events ahead of time so that we’re ready to post as soon as the game/event is over. This often means that when the Nittany Lions lose a big game, we’ve already made a graphic that we no longer need.

These graphics are often ones that we’re pretty proud of, and with the loss, they’ll never see the light of day…until now.

We decided to comb through our archives from the past year to find some of our favorite unused graphics that got buried in the graphics graveyard so you can all see what might’ve been. Penn State lost a lot of big games this year, so there’s plenty to look through.

Penn State men’s soccer took home the Big Ten regular season title and was one game away from their second double title in three years but fell to Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament final. The women’s team was also within striking distance of the regular season title before a fatal loss cut those title hopes short.

As football season came to a close, we prepared numerous variations of a bowl announcement graphic. Some bowls and teams that we prepared, obviously, didn’t end up happening.

For the Peach Bowl itself, we had two graphics prepared for a victory. The first is a generic “champion” graphic, which would’ve been posted right after the final whistle.

The second would’ve celebrated Penn State being the first team to win every New Year’s Six Bowl game. You can see, it’s unfinished. The bottom left would’ve been a trophy picture from the Peach Bowl and the area under the text would’ve been another image from the Peach Bowl. After Penn State got smoked by Ole Miss, these graphics went the way of the Dodo.

While a few Nittany Lions did leave Kansas City with individual national titles in wrestling, a few also left empty-handed.

Penn State men’s and women’s lacrosse teams both made it to the Big Ten Tournament final this year and ultimately, both lost.

Penn State baseball was one run away from sending the Big Ten Tournament final to extra innings and trying to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. However, those dreams were crushed 2-1 by Nebraska and I had to archive one of my favorite graphics of the year.

I had also predicted that in this year’s NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions would trade up to select Onward State’s very own Nolan Wick with the first pick, so I had a graphic prepared just in case. Seemingly, the Lions didn’t trade up to select him because of an issue with his college eligibility. Regardless, we know the Motor City will always be home to Nolan.
