Tenacious D Cancels Bryce Jordan Center Concert Following Trump Assassination Comments

Update, 12:43 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28:

The Bryce Jordan Center has officially canceled Tenacious D’s concert, according to the venue’s TicketMaster page.

Update, 2:52 p.m.:

A spokesperson for the Bryce Jordan Center told Onward State it wasn’t sure if the Tenacious D concert would be canceled at Penn State and that the BJC would provide updates as they arrived. Tickets for the event are still available on TicketMaster.

Original Story:

Jack Black’s comedy rock duo Tenacious D has canceled its remaining tour dates after band member Kyle Gass made a joke about Saturday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Footage from the group’s concert in Sydney on Sunday showed Black bringing out a birthday cake onstage to celebrate Gass’ 64th birthday. Black asked Gass to “make a wish,” Gass responded, “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

In a post to Instagram, Black said that he was “blindsided by what was said at the show” on Tuesday.

“After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold,” Black continued in the post.

In June, it was announced the group would be coming to the Bryce Jordan Center on Saturday, October 26. Proceeds from the concert would be donated to Rock the Vote, a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that encourages participation from younger voters in elections. In the past, Tenacious D has performed benefit concerts for Democratic politicians, including a gig at Kent State in 2012.

Gass apologized for the comments made in a post to Instagram on Tuesday morning, saying “I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone.”

“What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgment [sic],” he continued.

It’s unknown if tickets for the concert will be refunded. Onward State will update this story as more information comes out.
