Trace McSorley might be getting a job soon, folks.

According to Grant Paulsen, a Washington, D.C.-area sports journalist, the Washington Commanders are trying to sign the former Penn State quarterback to a deal ahead of their preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.

McSorley played for the Nittany Lions from 2015-18, starting at quarterback each year after 2015. He ended his Penn State career with 9,899 passing yards, 77 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions while rushing for 1,697 yards and 30 touchdowns. McSorley’s passing yards and touchdowns total rank second-most in program history behind only the Green Bay Packers’ Sean Clifford.

During his most recent stint of unemployment, McSorely has spent time training at Penn State. He worked with quarterbacks Drew Allar and Ethan Grunkemeyer and their high school quarterbacks coach Brad Maendler, who’s been given credit for both Ohio natives’ rise to the top of the recruiting rankings.

The Baltimore Ravens drafted McSorley with the No. 197 overall pick after the 2018 season, and McSorley spent two seasons backing up Lamar Jackson. McSorley threw for 90 yards, one touchdown, and a 30% completion rate over three appearances with the Ravens, who waived him in 2021.

McSorley was signed by the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. He appeared in six games for Arizona and finished with 412 passing yards, five interceptions, no touchdowns, and a 54.22% completion rate.

The New England Patriots signed McSorley during the 2023 preseason but waived him in August. The Steelers brought McSorley on board for their practice squad in December but cut him before their playoff appearance against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

McSorley was most recently on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad but was cut before a postseason game against the Buffalo Bills in January 2024.
