Jonathan Sutherland Signs With New York Giants
Former Penn State football linebacker Jonathan Sutherland has signed with the New York Giants as a defensive back, the football team announced Thursday. Sutherland spent six years at Penn State and previously played for the Seattle Seahawks.
Sutherland wore Penn State’s blue and white from 2017-22 and was the first player to wear the No. 0 for the Nittany Lions. Sutherland recorded 58 appearances, 11 starts, 137 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and one forced fumble across his college career. He was also known for blocking two punts against Idaho in 2019.
After leaving college, Sutherland was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seahawks. He was also drafted into the Canadian Football League by the Montreal Alouettes. Sutherland didn’t record any game appearances with Seattle.
Sutherland joins fellow Penn Stater Theo Johnson with the Giants. With the retirement of Darren Wallen, Johnson is making noise as a potential top tight end option for New York.
