Nittany Lions In The NFL: Preseason Roundup

With the NFL preseason coming to an end, the opportunities for former Penn Staters to prove themselves early have come and gone.

Nittany Lions across the NFL showcased their abilities during the preseason vying for a spot on a 53-man roster. Now they must wait till Tuesday to find out if they made their respective teams.

In case you missed any of the action, here’s how Penn State football alums fared during the NFL preseason.

Parker Washington, Jacksonville Jaguars

Parker Washington impressed the Jaguars despite his limited playing time during the preseason. He had eight receptions for 83 yards and scored a touchdown during the Jaguars’ second preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, Washington’s highlight of this preseason came on a kickoff return.

During the Jaguars’ first preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Washington took advantage of the NFL’s new kickoff return rules when he had a 73-yard kick return where he displayed his athleticism.

Sean Clifford, Green Bay Packers

Sean Clifford threw for 207 passing yards during the Packers’ three preseason games with one touchdown and one interception. Clifford battled rookie quarterback Michael Pratt during the preseason for the Packers’ backup job this season behind Jordan Love.

KJ Hamler, Buffalo Bills

KJ Hamler played in all three games and recorded five receptions for 29 yards across the Buffalo Bills three games. In the Bills’ last preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, Hamler took reps as a running back. He rushed three times for 21 yards and scored a touchdown.

Ji’Ayir Brown, San Francisco 49ers

After making headlines during last year’s Super Bowl when he intercepted Patrick Mahomes, Ji’Ayir Brown is set to make a big leap in his second year in the NFL. During the preseason, Brown recorded four solo tackles and forced a fumble during the 49ers’ last preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Olu Fashanu, New York Jets

Olu Fashanu started at left tackle in his first preseason game against the Washington Commanders and had a successful debut. He recorded 13-pass blocking snaps and didn’t allow a single pressure. In his second appearance, Fashanu moved to right tackle where he played a total of 29 snaps on offense.

Kalen King, Green Bay Packers

Kalen King played in two of the Packers’ preseason games. King recorded a total of nine tackles in his two appearances and forced a fumble during the Packers’ last preseason game.

Trace McSorley, Washington Commanders

After signing with the Washington Commanders, McSorley appeared in two of Washington’s preseason games and threw for 218 passing yards and rushed for 40 yards. He threw for one touchdown along with one interception.

Despite struggling in his first preseason game, McSorley played very well in the Commanders’ last preseason game against the Patriots and made headlines when he refused to be tackled by Patriots’ cornerback Azizi Hearn.
