Staff Predictions: No. 8 Penn State vs. Bowling Green
We are one day away from being back in Beaver Stadium, folks.
After a 34-12 statement win in West Virginia last week, Penn State football will try to keep its momentum going against Bowling Green.
The Falcons had a blowout win against Fordham last week, but playing in Beaver Stadium is a whole different world. Even with more rainy weather in the forecast for Saturday, our staffers see this game as a blowout in Penn State’s favor.
Fernando Martinez Ruiz De Esparza (1-0): Penn State 45, Bowling Green 7
2-0. That’s pretty much all I need to say.
Penn State looked amazing in their first game against West Virginia on both sides of the ball. For that reason, I shouldn’t expect anything less on Saturday against Bowling Green, especially at Beaver Stadium. Due to the rain in the forecast, I expect the Nittany Lions’ offense to lean on their running game and make Drew Allar throw the ball less. So, expect huge games from Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen.
As for the Falcons, they don’t stand a chance. Bowling Green won its first game of the season against Fordham, an FCS school, but doesn’t have the talent nor physicality to give the Nittany Lions a legitimate test. The hostile environment at Beaver Stadium will be too much for them to overcome, so I expect them to struggle mightily on both sides of the ball.
Penn State wins in a blowout and goes into the bye week 2-0.
Michael Siroty (1-0): Penn State 54, Bowling Green 13
Bowling Green running back Terion Stewart had 14 carries for 161 yards and three touchdowns in week one, but it was against Fordham. Penn State looked really good on both sides of the ball against West Virginia, a much stronger team than Bowling Green.
There’s really not much to this game against the Falcons. The Beaver Stadium crowd will see a dominant 41-point win, along with improved WiFi to post about the victory, in the Nittany Lions’ home opener.
Aidan Conrad (1-0): Penn State 63, Bowling Green 3
This is the year. Penn State is having fun. Andy Kotelnicki brought in an explosive offense. Drew Allar is throwing the ball efficiently. The team is playing sound defense. This is the year Penn State wins the College Football Playoff.
CJ Gill (1-0): Penn State 42, Bowling Geen 12
The Nittany Lions will easily take care of business in their home opener against Bowling Green. There might be a little bit of a hangover from Penn State’s big win in Morgantown, but I expect Drew Allar and the offense to cruise through the Falcons on Saturday.
It’s hard to imagine a day when the Penn State defense allows anything more than a touchdown or two. Second and third-string players should make up the majority of the snaps in the third and fourth quarters.
Jamie Lynch (1-0): Penn State 56, Bowling Green 13
Other than the fact that we’re finally back in Beaver Stadium, there’s nothing much to see here, folks.
I think the Nittany Lions will cruise to their second victory of the season, despite the impending rain in the forecast. I look forward to seeing Andy Kotelnicki’s offense develop, with the Allar-Pribula package becoming even stronger.
I also expect Penn State’s defense to show up, dominating the turnover battle. Minimizing Bowling Green’s running back Terion Stewart, who exploded for 161 rushing yards and three touchdowns last weekend against Fordham, will be key.
Bowling Green is a historic opponent for Penn State, as they are the team that Joe Paterno defeated to earn his 200th and 300th career wins. This will be the first time since the 1998 milestone that the Falcons return to Beaver Stadium. Saturday’s game will be a stroll through memory lane to begin the 2024 home slate for the Nittany Lions. Expect a commanding victory.
Charlie Pegler (0-0): Penn State 56, Bowling Green 7
I really don’t have much to say about this game other than the fact that Penn State is going to steamroll Bowling Green. Drew Allar played like the best quarterback in the Big Ten against West Virginia and Nick Singleton is all the way back.
I reckon Allar will be out of this game with six minutes left in the second quarter, and I expect Ethan Grunkemeyer to throw at least two touchdowns to Mehki Flowers in the fourth quarter. Bowling Green will score a garbage-time touchdown and James Franklin will be irate about it. This is going to be a fun one. Roll State.
Nolan Wick (1-0): Penn State 56, Bowling Green 10
I expect nothing less than an offensive showcase and a defensive clinic from the Nittany Lions against the Falcons at Beaver Stadium.
Beau Pribula should see even more action, while the second- and third-strings will see substantial playing time in the second half. Look for this specifically in the cornerback room, as James Franklin said on Monday that he thinks there are six guys who can play, and that there will be some rotation.
This almost certainly includes sophomores Zion Tracy and Elliot Washington II, who each had reps against West Virginia, but didn’t start.
CJ Doebler (1-0): Penn State 38, Bowling Green 0
I’m predicting a shutout during the Nittany Lions’ home opener this weekend. The defense played nearly lights out last week, giving up just one touchdown and two field goals on the road in Morgantown. Penn State had two shutouts at home last year, and I think the group is going to start to show their full potential in the next few weeks.
On the offensive side, I think the wide receivers will be more prominent after Trey Wallace and Omari Evans were the only receivers to catch a pass last week. I think the offense will have a big week and show a little bit more of what it’s capable of under Andy Kotelnicki en route to a victory.
Mitch Corcoran (1-0): Penn State 52, Bowling Green 6
To be frank, I don’t give a darn that Terion Stewart had 161 yards and three touchdowns or that Bowling Green’s offense had over 300 yards and five touchdowns on the ground against Fordham. I also don’t give a darn about a little bit of rain, either.
Good for the Falcons for seeming like they could be a threat in the MAC, but we’re talking about two different leagues of football between the MAC and the Big Ten. Penn State just held a team in West Virginia that had the third-best rushing offense in the FBS last season (228.9 yards per game) to 85 rushing yards last week.
Need I say more?
Joe Lister (1-0): Penn State 100, Bowling Green 0
It’s Bowling Green.
