UPUA Elects SPA Liaison, Appoints Parliamentarian

The 19th Assembly of the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) met Wednesday to elect two liaisons, appoint its parliamentarian, and swear in several representatives.

The meeting began with several special presentations. First was a presentation by THON 2025 Executive Director Keegan Sobczak and Communications Director Arushi Krishnan. They touched on how to get involved in THON and reminded the assembly that committee member applications close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 19.

Next was a presentation from the University Park Allocation Committee. The committee talked about how it aims to enhance the student experience by funding events, student organizations, and more. It also provided information on how to become a UPAC committee member and encouraged the assembly to apply.

Following this, Penn State’s director of the Department of Environmental Sustainability talked about the committee’s focus for the year, which includes community engagement, community building, and community belonging.

To wrap up the presentations, Speaker Fletcher Port reminded the assembly of its responsibilities and provided clarity on the attendance policy.

Before moving on to reports from President Zion Sykes and Vice President Rasha Elwakil, several representatives were sworn into the assembly: Deputy Director of Sustainability Josaih Policard, Director of Sustainability Engagement Diane Jun, Director of Student Sustainability Network Sree Penumuchu, and Latino Caucus Representative Sophia Carpinteyro.

Elections

The first election of the evening was for the role of SPA Liaison. Shayla Hsu was the sole nominee for the position. Hsu spoke about her past experience within UPUA, as well as her plans to foster a strong relationship between SPA and UPUA.

Hsu won the election.

To wrap up the meeting, Asfya Umaimah MD Zainizam was confirmed as parliamentarian for the 19th assembly.
