Nittany Lions In The NFL: Week Three

While Penn State football eviscerated Kent State 56-0 on Saturday, former Penn State players were getting ready to suit up across the NFL.

With week three wrapped up, it’s time to check in on how former Penn State stars fared in their respective games this weekend.

Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles

Running back Saquon Barkley had his best game of the young season, totaling 147 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. His 65-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter got the Eagles on the board and after a late Saints touchdown, earned the go-ahead score to seal the Eagles the win.

Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers

Tight end Pat Freiermuth continued to be a reliable option for Justin Fields as he helped the Pittsburgh Steelers reach a 3-0 start to the season on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. He left Acrisure Stadium with four catches for 33 yards.

Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

While wide receiver Chris Godwin had his least explosive outing of the season so far, he did reel in another touchdown, paired with 53 receiving yards, for the Buccaneers’ only score of the afternoon. With that, Godwin has scored a touchdown in each of his first three games of the year and has a significant 253 receiving yards so far, as well.

Micah Parsons, Dallas Cowboys

Despite the Dallas Cowboys’ loss, defensive end Micah Parsons had his highest tackle tally of the season with five on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. After a strong defensive start against the Cleveland Browns in week one, Parsons hasn’t registered a sack in the last two games.

Miles Sanders, Carolina Panthers

Running back Miles Sanders rushed for his first touchdown of the season for the Carolina Panthers in a stellar win against the Las Vegas Raiders. His seven rushes for 17 yards weren’t the flashiest, but Sanders added a bit of production in the receiving game with two catches for 13 yards.

Jordan Stout, Baltimore Ravens

Punters are people, too!

Jordan Stout punted the rock four times as the Ravens narrowly avoided collapse against the Cowboys. Three of his four punts landed within the Cowboys’ 20-yard line.

Brenton Strange, Jacksonville Jaguars

Brenton Strange, a second-year Jacksonville Jaguars tight end, had two receptions for 12 yards and the Jaguars’ sole touchdown in their blowout loss to the Bills on Monday Night Football. The score early in the third quarter was his first touchdown of the 2024 season.

Mike Gesicki, Cincinnati Bengals

Another former Penn State tight end played in the Monday night doubleheader, this time in Cincinnati. Mike Gesicki was targeted by Joe Burrow five times in the Bengals’ loss to Washington, reeling in four catches for 47 yards.

Other Notables

  • Chicago Bears safety Jaquan Brisker had his lowest tackle count of the season, with six in the team’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
  • Safety Ji’Ayir Brown of the San Francisco 49ers defended two passes along with two solo and two assisted tackles in the team’s late loss in Los Angeles.
  • Tight end Theo Johnson recorded one catch for 13 yards in the Giants’ first win of the season against the Browns.
  • Safety Nick Scott registered four solo tackles and two assisted tackles in the Panthers’ win in Las Vegas.
  • After last week’s breakout game against the Raiders, Ravens linebacker Odafe Oweh did not register any major stat in Dallas. He also had a controversial roughing the passer called on him late in the fourth quarter that made the game even shakier for Baltimore.
