Gameday Observations: UCLA

Well, there’s a first time for everything.

On Saturday, for the first time in several decades, Penn State football faced UCLA. The Nittany Lions hosted the Bruins in the first of three games against new Big Ten teams this season, winning 27-11 to maintain their undefeated record.

From FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff to a poor student section, here’s all that we picked up from the first time the Nittany Lions played the Bruins in several generations.

UCLA Not Ready For The Big Ten

Penn State’s Stripe Out crowd was, frankly, not that impressive. The announced attendance for the game was 110,047, but that’s not counting the gaps in the student section. This was far from a White Out crowd, or even a “White Out…energy” crowd.

Still, UCLA had trouble running plays on offense. The Bruins had a false start and were forced to call a few timeouts because of the noise in the stadium. It’s almost like playing in a near-empty Rose Bowl every week just doesn’t quite compare to playing in the second-largest venue in the hemisphere.

Another Week, Another Color Theme

After last week’s “White Out…energy” game against Illinois, Penn State fans were again told which colors to wear with the program’s annual Stripe Out. Students, as always, wore white, while other sections were divided columns into creating blue and white stripes.

While the student section had its issues, the stripes looked crisp across the stadium.

Better get used to these color-themed games, folks. We still have two more.

‘White Out…Energy’ Hangover In The South End Zone

Folks, the student section was a disaster.

Maybe Penn State students were burnt out after last week’s “White Out…energy” game, but this was not a good look. There was never a point during the game when the student section was full, many students were wearing white, and by the end of the halftime, there were parents in blue wandering through the section. It wasn’t pretty.

With any luck, a month’s rest from home football games will have people reenergized for the Ohio State game.

Big Noon Kickoff Back In Town

Everyone’s not-so-favorite pregame show, FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff, was parked outside the Bryce Jordan Center on gameday. From free cowboy hats to speaker issues, the show had its ups and downs.

Still, the Big Noon Kickoff crowd dragged LaVar Arrington from his ST1X C1TY tailgate to its setup inside the stadium, making for a great photo op with Arrington, Urban Meyer, Matt Leinart, and Brady Quinn. Big Ten legends, all of them.

Finally, Some Sun

After what felt like an eternity of rainy days in Happy Valley, the sun finally came out for the UCLA game. The Bruins seemed to bring their Los Angeles sunshine to State College, with warm weather hovering around 70ยบ.

With Penn State’s next home game in a month, this was probably as good as it will get all year for Nittany Lion fans.
