[Photo Story] Penn State vs. USC
What a game, folks!
Penn State traveled to sunny Los Angeles this weekend to face USC in the Nittany Lions’ first West Coast away game of the new-era Big Ten. After trailing 17-3, the Nittany Lions crawled their way back and emerged victorious courtesy of a Ryan Barker field goal in overtime.
Despite the long journey, our photographers were on-site at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for all the action. Let’s take a look back at our favorite photos from the game.
The stage for this historic battle? The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Penn State arrived about two hours before kickoff, soaking in the cheers of the Nittany Lions fans who had made the trip.
It didn’t take long to get warm in the Los Angeles heat.
The Nittany Lions took to the field over a fairly equal mix of cheers and boos.
It was a rough start for Penn State. The Nittany Lions couldn’t find the end zone at all in the first half, trailing 20-6 after the first two quarters.
Penn State came out swinging in the second half with a deep ball to Tyler Warren, a play in which Warren both snapped the ball as the center and caught the touchdown.
Kaytron Allen was next up to find the end zone. His touchdown came after a long drive with crucial plays by Omari Evans and Warren.
The defense finally started to find its groove in the second half as well.
USC did not go down without a fight, keeping itself barely ahead of Penn State.
After some fourth down heroics and a Nick Singleton touchdown, the Nittany Lions made some key defensive stops to force the game into overtime.
After a missed field goal by USC in overtime, Ryan Barker finished the deal for a Nittany Lions win.
It was all smiles (and a few tears of joy) from Penn State following the walk-off win.
A few Penn Staters even planted flags at midfield, much to the chagrin of James Franklin.
6-0.
Goodnight, City of Stars.
