No. 12 Penn State Women’s Hockey Dominates Against Dartmouth 4-1
No. 12 Penn State women’s hockey (6-2) defeated Dartmouth (0-2) 4-1 at home to get its second sweep of the season.
Goals came from Katelyn Roberts, Grace Outwater, and Stella Retrum. After Friday night’s win, Penn State outscored the Big Green 10-1 on the weekend.
How It Happened
After Friday night’s win over the Big Green, Penn State came out strong for the second game of the series. Three minutes in, Dartmouth was called on a tripping penalty to put Penn State on the power play.
Captain Tessa Janecke got the first shot off for Penn State, but it was wide of the net. Stella Retrum and Kendall Butze each tried to score but were blocked by Dartmouth goaltender Michaela Hesová. The power play ended quickly for the Nittany Lions, with three shots on goal at the end of it.
Penn State continued to dominate on offense, firing at Hesová. Retrum had the closest attempt, with the puck landing right in the bread basket of the goalie. Abby Stonehouse skated into position but was blocked by a defender on her path to the net.
Olivia Paidosh was called for holding, giving the Nittany Lions another chance to score on the power play. However, this power play wasn’t as intense as the last one. Penn State generated three shots on goal throughout the two-minute opportunity. The second power play ended midway through the period, scoreless.
Dartmouth started to pick up on offense, attacking Katie DeSa and trying to get the first score on the board. DeSa was prepared, blocking every shot coming at her.
To continue their momentum, Tiffany Hill was called for a slashing penalty.
Dartmouth continued its campaign, firing at DeSa and skating around the Nittany Lion special teams.
With five shots generated, the penalty winded down with five minutes left in the first.
Penn State was creeping at Dartmouth’s door when Katelyn Roberts took the puck from Janecke right in front of the net and tapped it in.
The period ended with Penn State leading Dartmouth 1-0.
The second period started with a penalty on Penn State against Grace Tullock for interference, putting Dartmouth back on the power play. Thirty seconds into it, Dartmouth was called for interference, creating four-on-four hockey.
However, both teams couldn’t generate anything on offense, ending both penalties with the same score.
The first half of the period was coming to an end with Dartmouth skated down into the Penn State zone and scored in front of the net to tie the game.
Penn State rebounded immediately when Stella Retrum was fed a pass from Tessa Janecke to put the Nittany Lions back in the lead.
Moments after, the Nittany Lions skated together to take the puck from the Big Green. Grace Outwater took the puck from off the pipe and fired it into the net for her first collegiate goal.
To continue its energy, Penn State was back on the power play for the second time this game from a cross-checking penalty.
The Nittany Lions did not let up despite their two-goal lead against Dartmouth and kept shooting during the power play.
Lyndie Lobdell came up from the rear center to attack the goaltender but was denied. The penalty and period ended with Penn State leading 3-1, looking at getting the sweep on the series.
The final frame started with a power play for the Big Green on Nicole Hall for body checking. The penalty was uneventful for Dartmouth, with only one shot on goal for the two minutes.
Soon after the end of the power play, Penn State went back on the advantage after an interference call.
The offense continued to try to extend the lead when Brianna Brooks passed the puck to Outwater to score the first power play goal of the game.
Only five minutes into the final frame, Penn State was up 4-1.
Dartmouth took another penalty for body-checking, putting Penn State on the power play once more. The Nittany Lions stayed strong on offense but were unsuccessful throughout the opportunity.
For their fourth penalty of the game, Maddy Christian took a penalty for interference, giving Dartmouth another chance. The Big Green could not set up for a shot, ending the power play without a score.
To end the game, Lobdell fired a shot at the net but was denied.
