No. 12 Penn State Women’s Hockey Rolls Over Stonehill 11-1

Penn State women’s hockey (7-3-0) bounced back after a shutout loss against Cornell on Friday to defeat Stonehill (1-8-0) 11-1, earning third place in the Ice Breaker tournament.

Katie DeSa, Lauren Barbro, and Annie Spring split the weekend in goaltending. Grace Outwater recorded her first collegiate hat trick while Mckenna Walsh scored her first collegiate goal.

How It Happened

After a shutout loss against Cornell, Penn State came out hot against Stonehill.

Abby Stonehouse fought for the puck to get the game’s first shot but was denied by Alexsa Caron.

Minutes into the first period, Stonehill took a roughing penalty, which gave Penn State a chance to turn around its unsuccessful power play. Tessa Janecke passed the puck to Katelyn Roberts for a one-timer but could not get the shot off. Maddy Christian tried getting the puck on the net but met Stonehill defenders.

The Skyhawks killed the penalty. Penn State led shots 5-1.

The Nittany Lions did not let up on offense, keeping the puck in the zone. Grace Outwater tried skating the puck in but met a defender in front of the net.

From right in front of the net, Outwater’s shot flew past Caron to land in the back of the net.

Stella Retrum tried to continue the momentum from Outwater’s goal but her shot went into the chest of Caron.

Confusion from the Nittany Lions led the Skyhawks to a scoring opportunity but Barbro was prepared.

Alyssa Machado took the puck to the net to be denied but Outwater was there for her rebound to put it in the back of the net.

This was Outwater’s second goal of the day, putting Penn State up 2-0 with six minutes left in the first period. Penn State continued to lead shots 14-2.

A quick shot came from Stonehouse where Caron caught the puck, preventing the Nittany Lions from extending the lead.

The Skyhawks took the puck down the ice where they met Barbro’s gloves, trying to create traffic in front of the net.

Penn State took over on offense to continue the campaign in the first period and ended the period with the puck in the offensive end.

The second period started with Penn State continuing to dominate on offense. Retrum fired a quick shot towards Caron that went wide of the post. Nicole Hall missed on Retrum’s rebound.

Karolina Hengelmüller took the puck from Roberts and centered her shot to score past Caron.

Maddy Christian took Tiffany Hill’s rebound and shot the puck into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

The score was now 4-0 in favor of the Nittany Lions.

Stonehill took a penalty for high-sticking, putting Penn State back on the power play after an unsuccessful advantage in the first period.

The Stonehill special teams stopped Penn State from scoring and the Skyhawks skated down for a shorthanded goal to put them on the board.

The power play ended for Penn State with no goals.

The second period lit up for both teams on offense.

Caron denied Brianna Brooks, who continued to stand on her head, trying to stop Penn State from extending the lead.

The Nittany Lions were still launching pucks at Caron when Janecke tried a one-timer that went up into the netting. Retrum picked up on Janecke’s momentum and took the backward pass from her and shot into the net.

Aiding the Penn State offensive roll, Stonehill took a penalty for hooking, putting the Nittany Lions back on the power play.

Brooks was eyeing the puck when she received it from Outwater and took the long shot into the back of the net to extend the lead to 6-1.

This was the first power-play goal on the weekend for Penn State.

By the end of the second period, the Nittany Lions led Stonehill 6-1 and 48-9 in shots.

Spring entered in net for the Nittany Lions for the third period.

The final frame on the weekend started off with a quick release goal from Hall who was assisted by Machado all in one motion.

The Nittany Lions continued to keep the puck in the offensive zone when Outwater set up a goal from Brooks seconds after the previous goal by Hall.

The score was now 8-1 three minutes into the third period.

Penn State did not let Stonehill have a chance to score, causing turnovers to continue the domination with the puck barely crossing the blue line.

Karley Garcia was being harassed by Skyhawk defenders who prevented her from getting a shot off.

Janecke took the puck from the rebound but the puck was poked out by Stonehill before she could try to score.

Stonehouse found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal when Christian passed the puck behind.

The score was now 9-1 midway through the final frame.

After a neutral zone face-off, Walsh was set up by Brooks to get her first collegiate goal.

Stonehill committed another penalty to put Penn State on the power play for the final time in the tournament, this time for hooking.

Hengelmüller skated into the offensive zone and tried to get her second goal of the day but Caron was there to catch the shot.

The penalty winded down with only one shot for the Nittany Lions.

Stonehill had a breath of life with multiple shots on Spring but it was not enough to come out of the deficit.
