[Photo Story] Penn State Football’s Stripe Out On Film

Who doesn’t love the warmth and grain of film?

In the past, we here at Onward State have played around with disposable cameras to showcase Penn State’s campus on 35 mm film. This fall, we figured it was time to take our film adventures to the next level and shoot a roll at a Penn State football game.

For this article, I shot a roll of Fujicolor Superia X-Tra 400 film in my Kodak Ektar H35 film camera. This film camera produces a similar quality image to a typical disposable camera, but since it’s reusable, it’s better for the environment. It also shoots half-frame, so the pictures are smaller (and vertical) but you get 72 pictures out of a traditional 36 frame roll. It’s more bang for your buck.

I shot this roll at Penn State’s Stripe Out game against UCLA a few weeks ago. The camera I used is point-and-shoot with a wide focal length, so I couldn’t zoom in at all. Because of this, and the fact that the camera doesn’t handle motion well, I couldn’t shoot much of the actual game (I also had to do my usual job with my digital camera).

Because of that, most of the images below are more atmospheric than anything, showcasing the vibe and ambiance of a Penn State football Saturday. Without further ado, here are my photos:

The walk to the stadium built the anticipation for the game.

Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff was in town for this game, along with other alumni!

About two hours before kickoff, the Nittany Lions arrived at Beaver Stadium.

Warm-ups were the closest I could get to the players with the camera.

Christian Hackenberg watched on as the Nittany Lions got ready to go.

Before long, it was game time. As you can see, even when Penn State was in the red zone, the players were too far away for my camera to get great images.

In the tunnel after halftime, I got close to the players again for these cool shots.

The fans and cheerleaders are what make Beaver Stadium special.

If it weren’t for the fans, Beaver Stadium would just be a giant metal shell.

The Nittany Lion had some fun with a giant inflatable ball!

After the game, everyone locked arms for the singing of the Alma Mater.

The players were all smiles as they left the field.
