Staff Predictions: No. 4 Penn State vs. Purdue

There are only three games left, folks.

Penn State football’s regular season is coming to an end and this week, the Nittany Lions head to West Lafayette, Indiana to take on Purdue. Penn State is back on track after beating Washington 35-6 in the White Out game last weekend.

The Boilermakers have not won a game since week one and have struggled to be competitive against some Big Ten opponents this season. Our staffers think this game will be a blowout in favor of the Nittany Lions, except for one for some reason.

Fernando Martinez Ruiz De Esparza (9-0): Penn State 49, Purdue 7

Folks, get ready for a blowout.

Penn State looked very impressive in its White Out victory over Washington last week. It dominated the Huskies the entire game and finally got off to that fast start it desperately needed. Now, the Nittany Lions head into Purdue with a lot of momentum and confidence. I expect them to dominate both sides of the ball on Saturday.

As for Purdue, this team is just god-awful. They are 1-8, only beating a poor 4-6 Indiana State team. Six of its eight losses have been by 17 or more points and the only games it has been competitive in were against Illinois and Northwestern. Despite having a home-field advantage, this team is just not talented at all. In my opinion, Purdue should just forfeit to spare themselves from embarrassment.

I expect the Nittany Lions to blow out the Boilermakers, and we will see the backups like Beau Pribula come in during the fourth quarter.

Cooper Cazares (8-0): Penn State 35, Purdue 10

I think Penn State takes care of business against an abysmal Purdue team. I doubt the Nittany Lions will start as quickly as last game, but it shouldn’t be difficult to get going. I give the Boilermakers a quarter to keep it interesting but after that, Penn State will run away with this one.

Michael Siroty (7-0): Penn State 45, Purdue 10

Purdue does not have a good football team. It’s that simple.

Penn State got its offense rolling against Washington, a needed improvement from the Ohio State game, and I expect that to keep up this weekend. Plus, the defense that has been solid all season long with a few hiccups here and there will keep up its work against a bad Boilermaker offense. The Nittany Lions will be leaving West Lafayette 1-0.

CJ Gill (7-1): Penn State 45, Purdue 9

The Nittany Lions should take care of business in West Lafayette on Saturday. Purdue is arguably the worst team in the Big Ten this year and Penn State should have the advantage at every position group.

There might be another slow start or a few miscues along the way but realistically, this won’t be close. James Franklin said this week that some freshmen will get some playing time down the stretch, and this feels like a perfect game for some second- and third-string guys to get some action.

Jamie Lynch (8-1): Penn State 56, Purdue 3

Purdue has been bad this year. Truly, it has been awful. While Penn State has been known to play down to the level of its opponent at times, I don’t see this as one of those instances. The Nittany Lions had their best half of the year last week in the White Out. They are energized and firing on all cylinders. Penn State will cruise into West Lafayette and walk away with a convincing win.

Aidan Conrad (8-1): Penn State 42, Purdue 0

Penn State will do what it does best, win the games it’s supposed to win. The Boilermakers aren’t a good football team and I’ll be shocked to see this one close after 20 minutes of play.

Collin Ward (0-0): Purdue 21, Penn State 7

Based on what I have been seeing on ESPN and the rest of the media, all Purdue has to do to beat Penn State by two scores is slap an SEC badge on its chest. That is exactly what is going to happen. The Boilermakers will be honorary SEC members for the weekend and play “real football.” A shame for all Penn State fans who thought one loss was good enough.

James Russell (6-0): Penn State 34, Purdue 0

I’ll keep this one short and sweet. The number No. 4 Nittany Lions should have a field day at Ross-Ade Stadium against the Purdue Boilermakers. This Nittany Lions team is coming off a dominant 35-6 victory over the Washington Huskies.

This game poses the opportunity for Penn State to flex its muscles against an inferior conference opponent. Penn State’s defense could keep Purdue’s offensive attack at bay. Last week against Ohio State, the Boilermakers were shut out 45-0. I expect the pass rush to get home with Abdul Carter playing a major role.

On the offensive side of the ball, I would like to see the receivers continue to get more involved in the offense. The group’s outing against Washington was a step in the right direction. James Franklin spoke about freshmen seeing more opportunities as the regular season winds down and I believe this game could be the beginning.

Nolan Wick (8-1): Penn State 45, Purdue 3

Earlier this week, James Franklin emphasized the importance of dominating all four quarters. Penn State is more than capable of doing that against Purdue.

The Nittany Lions’ secondary showed significant improvement against Washington, which deals a bad hand to Hudson Card, who has struggled throughout the season. He lacks any true playmakers to throw or hand off to, which makes life even easier for Tom Allen.

Unlike the last time in West Lafayette, I don’t see Saturday being a challenge for Penn State against a rebuilding program.

CJ Doebler (8-1): Penn State 49, Purdue 3

This one’s not going to be close. After last week’s rout of Washington, the Nittany Lions will ride the momentum into another beatdown. The offense is hitting its stride again after the loss to Ohio State and the defense seems to be finding its rhythm, so I don’t think a road atmosphere will hurt Franklin and Co.

Purdue is the worst team in the Big Ten, entering Saturday with a 1-8 record while going winless in conference play. Last week, it was shut out by Ohio State 45-0. Coming off of a loss that bad, the extra juice might get the Boilermakers a field goal, but I wouldn’t expect much else. The Nittany Lions should have no trouble in West Lafayette.

Mitch Corcoran (9-0): Penn State 42, Purdue 6

This one won’t be even close. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: If this game is close at all, fire everybody.

Purdue’s point differential against Big Ten opponents is -151 and it’s lost by 25.2 points per game. I don’t see anything changing this week and the Nittany Lions handle the Boilermakers easily. Get those backups in early.

Joe Lister (8-1): Penn State 38, Purdue 6

Liam Clifford legacy game.
