Your Guide To Finding Future Roommates

By the end of every fall semester, college students must figure out housing for the next academic year and find one or more roommates.

There may be various reasons why someone may be searching for a roommate, whether they are coming in as a first-year or their friends are doing something different than them.

Here are the various ways to find someone to live with for the foreseeable future.

Ask Around

Although your immediate friend group friend may be pursuing a different housing option, they might know someone you can connect with. Ask other acquaintances, friends of friends, people in clubs you’re a part of, and so on.

You never know, your future roommate may just be one ask away.

Social Media

If you’re looking for housing as an incoming first-year, social media can be your best friend. Pages on Instagram and Facebook allow people to post about themselves. You can search through a diverse set of individuals or create your own post. Future roomies can just be one click away.

Even if you aren’t an incoming first-year, there are still pages dedicated to finding different housing and roommates from across the university. Use the search tool with detailed keywords (e.g., University Park, Class of 2029, downtown) to narrow down your search.

Roommate Finder Websites

There are many websites that market their ability to find potential roommates. From Roomsurf to Uloop, thousands of students post in hopes of finding their next housing mate.

Just create a profile, just like on social media, and start your hunting.

Go Random

Although going random has a bad reputation, it can sometimes introduce you to a lifelong friend. Going random on the person with whom you’ll be sharing your space for the next year might not be the most ideal thing approach, but on the bright side, you might learn a few important life skills (avoidance, conflict management, dealing with drama, etc).

Whatever happens with your venture in finding a roommate, just know it isn’t the end of the world. If you hate them, there are various ways around the sucky living situation you’ve gotten yourself into.

Happy roommate hunting, folks!
