Tom Allen Nominated For Broyles Award

Penn State football defensive coordinator Tom Allen has been nominated for the Broyles Award, the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation announced Tuesday afternoon. The award is given to the best assistant coach in the nation each year.

Allen is in his first year with the Nittany Lions after spending eight years as Indiana’s head coach, where he amassed a 33-49 overall record.

Allen was one of 10 nominees out of the Big Ten conference, seven of which are defensive coordinators.

After being hired in December, Allen has led the Penn State defense to become No. 5 in total defense in the country, allowing 273.4 yards per game. The Nittany Lions also have the No. 7 scoring defense in the nation with 14.6 points allowed per game.

Allen replaced Manny Diaz in Penn State’s defensive coordinator role after Diaz left for the head coaching job at Duke. Diaz was a semifinalist for the Broyles Award after crafting Penn State into one of the nation’s best defenses.

Penn State will suit up for its last regular season game at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, at Beaver Stadium against Maryland. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
