James Franklin ‘Hopeful’ Trey Wallace Will Play In Big Ten Championship

James Franklin said he was hopeful Penn State football wide receiver Trey Wallace would play in the Big Ten Championship against Oregon on Saturday. Wallace didn’t appear in the Nittany Lions’ 44-7 win over Maryland and was listed as questionable on the availability report.

Franklin said Wallace, Penn State’s top receiving option, “tweaked something” during practice in the leadup to the Maryland game. With Wallace unavailable, Penn State leaned more on wideout Omari Evans and tight end Khalil Dinkins in the receiving game. Tyler Warren again led all receivers with six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Franklin said he was pleased with how Penn State’s other wide receivers performed against the Terrapins. Penn State scored two touchdowns through the air, with freshman Tyseer Denmark scoring a touchdown as the game closed, leading to a tense moment postgame. The receiving unit as a whole finished with 20 catches for 193 yards.

“I was pleased with the wide receivers overall, and I keep pushing each week to make sure that we’re continuing to get those guys as many opportunities as possible,” Franklin said. “It’s going to be really important for us as the season goes on. That position, and the development of that position, and the production of that position has been priority No. 1, really, all off-season and all season.”

Penn State and Oregon will face off at 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. CBS will broadcast the affair.
