Abdul Carter Awarded Pair Of Big Ten Player Of The Year Honors
Penn State football star defensive end Abdul Carter was awarded two Big Ten end-of-season individual honors, the conference announced on Tuesday. Carter was named the Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year and the Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year.
Carter was a force in Penn State’s front seven as a defensive end. He finished his 2024 regular season campaign with 54 tackles, two forced fumbles, 10 sacks, and 19.5 tackles for loss, setting career highs in the latter two categories. He finished with the second-most sacks and the most tackles for loss in the conference.
The most recent Nittany Lion named the Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year was defensive end Carl Nassib in 2015. Along with Nassib, Carter joined Devon Still, Jared Odrick, Michael Haynes, Courtney Brown, and LaVar Arrington as Penn Staters to win the award, which was established in 1990.
The most recent Nittany Lion named the Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year was Devon Still in 2011. In addition to Still, other former Penn State football players to receive the award include Jared Odrick, Tamba Hali, Jimmy Kennedy, and one of the trophy’s namesakes, Courtney Brown.
Carter became the second player in a row to win both of these awards in the same year, following Illinois’ Johnny Newton, who won both last year.
