Penn State References You Didn’t Catch In ‘Wicked: Part I’

“Wicked” is the talk of the town right now, folks.

John M. Chu’s film adaptation of “Wicked” is sweeping the nation and breaking box office records. The film is based on the first half of Stephen Schwartz’s Broadway musical of the same name, telling the “untold” story of the witch characters from “The Wizard of Oz.”

What fans may not realize is that “Wicked” is not only based on the story of “The Wizard of Oz” but also on Penn State. Here are some Happy Valley-themed references we found in the songs from “Wicked.”

‘What Is This Feeling?’ — The Start Of Penn State Men’s Basketball Season

“Though I do admit it came on fast, still I do believe that it can last.”

This lyric describes the feeling that every Penn State men’s basketball fan goes through when the Nittany Lions get their first few big wins of the season. While you may have been in doubt before, out of nowhere you begin to believe that Penn State could be a tournament team when March rolls around.

‘Dancing Through Life’ — Sitting Through A Gen-Ed Course

“The trouble with schools is, they always try to teach the wrong lessons.”

This is a feeling every Penn State student has at some point sitting in a required course like ENGL 202 or a strange gen-ed you took a chance on, wondering why you scheduled that class and realizing you’ll likely never use any of the info you’re learning again.

‘No One Mourns The Wicked’ — Ohio State Losing To Michigan

“The enemy of all of us here in Oz is dead.”

This line is actually in reference to the feelings Penn Staters felt when they heard the news that Michigan upset Ohio State, thus opening the door for Penn State to go to the Big Ten Championship. Penn State won its game against Maryland later that day, sending the Nittany Lions to Indianapolis.

‘What Is This Feeling?’ — Going To The Pollock Testing Center

“My pulse is rushing, my head is reeling.”

Picture yourself at the Pollock Testing Center. You’re in line for a final exam you feel wildly unprepared for, nervously shaking as you walk through the TSA-style security area. If your pulse isn’t rushing at that point, I envy you.

‘Popular’ — Penn State Football Offensive Coordinator Andy Kotelnicki

“And when someone needs a makeover, I simply have to take over.”

This was Andy Kotelnicki’s mindset when he took over Penn State football’s offense this year. Last season, Penn State had struggles on offense that resulted in the firing of Mike Yurcich, the offensive coordinator at the time. This season, Kotelnicki has revamped the offense with a completely new look involving trick plays, a dual quarterback package, and a tight end regularly taking snaps under center.

‘Dear Old Shiz’ — Dear Old State

“We shall still revere the lessons learned in our days at dear old Shiz.”

I’ve heard through the grapevines that Stephen Schwartz wanted to directly include the Penn State alma mater in the film, but for trademark reasons, he had to rename the university to “Shiz University.” However, he left in the “dear old” part of the lyric in a reference to Penn State.

‘What Is This Feeling?’ — Living With A Random Roommate

“For, you see, my roommate is unusually and exceeding peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe.”

This is a universal experience for freshmen at Penn State when they choose to live with a random roommate. Sometimes, people get lucky, but I’ve heard countless horror stories about people living with the oddest characters during their freshman year.

‘Dancing Through Life’ — Going To Dollar Vodka Soda Night

“Let’s go down to the Ozdust Ballroom, we’ll meet there later tonight, we can dance ’til it’s light.”

The Ozdust Ballroom is actually just a metaphor for going to Champs Downtown on a Thursday night for Dollar Vodka Soda Night, dancing the night away until it’s light out…or when Champs closes, whatever comes first.

‘Popular’ — Getting Angry With Criticizing James Franklin

“Don’t be offended by my frank analysis.”

This is Onward State’s attitude whenever we publish an article that criticizes a coaching decision by James Franklin, especially after a big loss to a team like Ohio State or Michigan. You know…our frank analysis.

‘Defying Gravity’ — Skipping Classes After Going Out

“Too late to go back to sleep.”

After a long night out at the bars, college students can be somewhat prone to sleeping in. However, sometimes, you wake up and look at the clock, knowing if you go back to bed you’ll sleep through all your classes.

‘One Short Day’ — Bringing A Friend From Out Of Town To State College

“One short day to have a lifetime of fun.”

This is the feeling Penn Staters get when a friend from back home comes up to Happy Valley to visit. They’re only here for a little while, so you feel like need to make the visit as exciting as possible, cramming in stops at all of your favorite bars, a sporting event, and a tour of campus.

‘The Wizard And I’ — Onward State Staffer Michael Siroty

“And though I’d never show it, I’d be so happy I could melt.”

This is actually about Onward State staffer Michael Siroty thinking about if Penn State loses in the Big Ten Championship to Oregon.

Editor’s Note: Onward State staffer Michael Siroty is a fraud.

‘What Is This Feeling?’ — This Guy

“Every little trait, however small, makes my flesh begin to crawl.”
