Katie Schumacher-Cawley Becomes First Female Head Coach To Win Women’s Volleyball NCAA Championship

Penn State head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley became the first female head coach to win an NCAA women’s volleyball title after the Nittany Lions took down Louisville in four sets on Sunday.

In her third year as the Penn State head coach, Schumacher-Cawley led her team to a 35-2 record to give the program its first national title since 2014.

With or without a Penn State win, a female head coach would’ve been crowned a champion, as Schumacher-Cawley defeated Louisville head coach Dani Busboom Kelly.

After announcing she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in October, Schumacher-Cawley remained on the sidelines for Penn State’s title run as her story entered the national spotlight.

Schumacher-Cawley became the second Penn State head coach to be crowned a national champion, as Russ Rose won seven titles, including four in a row from 2007 to 2010. Rose also won the 1999 national championship with a team that featured Schumacher-Cawley as a player.
