Nittany Lions In The NFL: Week 17 Roundup
There’s just one more week of the NFL regular season, folks.
Former Penn State football players around the league helped keep their team’s playoff hopes alive, while others have long since clinched a spot in the postseason or have long since been eliminated from contention.
This week also featured new season highs, milestones, and one player ready to become part of NFL immortality.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at how everybody faired in the 17th week of the NFL season.
Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles
With his 167-yard performance against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. Barkley did so on 31 carries and averaged 5.4 yards per carry in the 41-7 blowout win.
Barkley sits at 2,005 rushing yards this season — 101 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s 40-year-old single-season rushing record.
Parker Washington, Jacksonville Jaguars
Wide receiver Parker Washington grabbed his second career touchdown pass in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 20-13 win over the Tennessee Titans. Washington made an impressive catch in the back of the end zone and somehow got both feet inbounds to put Jacksonville up 10-0 in the second quarter.
Washington finished the afternoon with three catches for 31 yards with his score. The rookie receiver has 30 catches for 375 yards and two touchdowns this season.
Mike Gesicki, Cincinnati Bengals
Tight end Mike Gesicki hauled in a season-high 10 catches on 12 targets for 86 yards in the Cincinnati Bengals’ 30-24 overtime win against the Denver Broncos on Saturday. Gesicki’s performance helped keep Cincinnati’s playoff hopes alive in the AFC.
His 10 catches tied a career-high for most catches in a game for the veteran tight end. Gesicki did it for the first time against the Raiders in 2021 when he was on the Dolphins and he had the same exact stat line: 10 catches on 12 targets for 86 yards.
Arnold Ebiketie, Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta Falcons edge rusher Arnold Ebiketie recorded his sixth sack of the season in Atlanta’s 30-24 overtime loss to the Washington Commanders Sunday night. Ebiketie had two tackles to go along with his sack. Ebiketie’s sack ties his career high for sacks in a season and puts him at 14.5 total through his three-year NFL career.
Odafe Oweh, Baltimore Ravens
Edge rusher Odafe Oweh found the sack column again after three straight sack-less games in the Baltimore Ravens’ 31-2 blowout victory over the Houston Texans on Christmas. Oweh had one tackle, one sack, and one tackle for loss in the win.
The fourth-year edge rusher has played one of his best seasons to date. Oweh has 34 tackles, one forced fumble, and a career-high nine sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss.
Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers
Like Gesicki, Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth set a season-high in receptions with seven in Pittsburgh’s 29-10 blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day. FreiermuthHe had 60 yards on his seven catches and fumbled once. He has 57 catches, 568 yards, and six touchdowns this season.
