[Photo Story] Penn State vs. Boise State In The Fiesta Bowl
It was a fiesta in Glendale!
Penn State defeated Boise State 31-14 in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal in the Fiesta Bowl on Tuesday night. The Nittany Lions’ win punched the ticket to the Orange Bowl semifinal, where they await the winner of Thursday’s Georgia vs. Notre Dame Sugar Bowl contest.
Our photographers traveled to Arizona to capture the victory.
The buses arrived at State Farm Stadium, and the team filed into the locker room.
Hip-hop artist Flavor Flav attended the game and even picked the Nittany Lions to win. His cousin, Shep Garner, played basketball for Penn State.
Penn State took the field to warm up before the game. Boise State fans had a huge showing at State Farm Stadium, and they were loud. Loud boos greeted every Nittany Lion position group that entered the field.
Another indoor stadium meant more cool pyrotechnics for the team entrance.
After a Boise State missed field goal, Penn State got the ball and ended up in the end zone with seven points from Tyler Warren.
Omari Evans caught a 38-yard pass in the end zone, giving Penn State a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Nittany Lion defense stuffed Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty the entire game. The Broncos’ running back tallied 30 carries for an average of only 3.5 yards per carry — his worst performance of the season.
The scoreboard read 17-7 going into halftime.
The Broncos cut the lead close to 17-14 in the third quarter. Penn State didn’t quit, as Drew Allar found Warren in the end zone again with a crazy catch.
Boise State couldn’t hang on. Zakee Wheatley intercepted Maddux Madsen’s pass and returned it to Penn State’s 41-yard line.
The running back duo thrived against the Broncos. Nick Singleton ran 58 yards to the end zone, and Penn State gained a 31-14 lead with five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Zion Tracy intercepted another of Madsen’s passes in the dying second of the fourth quarter to seal Penn State’s win.
Blue confetti, finally.
The trophy ceremony was nothing short of happiness. Each player on the stage took turns lifting the football-shaped Fiesta Bowl trophy.
Penn State will take on the winner of the Sugar Bowl, either No. 7 seed Notre Dame or No. 2 seed Georgia. The Nittany Lions will face that team in the College Football Playoff semifinal at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, in the Orange Bowl in Miami Gardens, Florida.
