Penn State Wrestling’s Zach Ryder Wins Big Ten Freshman Of The Week

Penn State wrestling true freshman Zach Ryder collected the sixth weekly award for the Nittany Lions this season after being named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Thursday.

Ryder was one of nine Nittany Lions in attendance at the 2025 Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tennessee, this past weekend. He went 5-0 with a pin and tech fall to claim the Southern Scuffle title at 184 pounds.

On his way to the top spot on the podium, Ryder defeated two ranked wrestlers in No. 22 DJ Parker of Oklahoma with a 9-2 decision and No. 25 TJ Stewart of Virginia Tech via a pin in the semi-finals.

The 5-0 performance this past weekend brought Ryder’s record to 8-0 on the season with two pins and a tech fall.

The Nittany Lions will be in action next as they open up their conference slate against Michigan State at 8 p.m. on Friday, January 10. The dual will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
