State College Mayor Ezra Nanes Announces Reelection Campaign

Looks like Penn State football players aren’t the only ones running it back.

State College mayor Ezra Nanes will run for reelection in 2025, he announced Tuesday. Nanes, who earned his MBA from Penn State in 2012, won his first election for mayor in 2021. Nanes ran unopposed in that general election, but defeated fellow Democrat Jim Leous in a primary race.

“Serving as Mayor of State College is the honor of a lifetime,” Nanes said in a release. “Thank you to the State College community for your confidence, support, and engagement over the past three years. Serving as Mayor of America’s greatest college town has been an incredible, life-changing experience. I have been inspired every day by the people of this community — our families, our students, our working professionals, our business owners, our service members and veterans, our retirees, our Penn Staters — and I am eager to continue serving you.”

The Nanes campaign said his 2025 campaign “will focus on continuing to enhance the quality of life in State College by championing local businesses, elevating the town’s profile, and building productive relationships with key leaders.” The campaign also said it will work with investing in infrastructure, developing the bike path and trail network, improving housing affordability and access, and more.

During his four years as mayor, Nanes launched a downtown free holiday bus token program, helped secure funding for Calder Way construction, and more. He also campaigned for the Democrats during the 2024 cycle, appearing on stage with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at a rally for Penn State students.

At present, Nanes is running unopposed in a Democratic-leaning town.

State College’s mayor serves a four-year term while earning a $13,000 annual salary. The mayor can’t vote among the Borough Council but can veto or approve ordinances and preside over council meetings.

Outside of working as State College’s mayor, Nanes serves as the director of enterprise account management at AccuWeather and as a founding partner at Pelvic Shanti Boutique. He also works in volunteer positions with the Downtown State College Improvement District, the Pennsylvania Municipal League, and Centre Foundation with the Osaze Osagie College Scholarship Endowment. Nanes received an undergraduate degree in the History of Art from Penn in 1994.
