Penn State Students Rally Against Donald Trump On Inauguration Day

A group of around 25 Penn State students protested the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump at the Allen Street Gates on Monday evening. The Student Committee for Defense and Solidarity, Students for Justice in Palestine, the People’s Defense Front of Northern Appalachia, and the Central PA Trans Alliance aired their grievances armed with hand-warmers and signs.

The protest officially began at 6 p.m., with various rehearsed chants directed toward Trump, fascism, Israel, and others. The participants stood in a half circle facing outwards, carrying tall signs and covered with winter gear, with most wearing scarves or masks, covering their faces.

The group cycled through several chants in between several speakers, who tackled different topics of interest. One spoke about transphobia and anti-trans legislation, while another tackled the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The protestors brandished many signs illustrating their grievances. The main sign, illustrating their point in full, said “Smash U.S. imperialism, fight for socialist revolution!” Smaller signs tackled the smaller issues, like “Make Racists Afraid Again,” “Workers Unite!” and “F*** Trump,” among other equally provocative exclamations.

Students and residents walked past the protest, avoiding but observing. Many laughed and took photographs, others tried to avoid eye contact.

The protest wrapped up at around 6:45 p.m. with 45 minutes until the Ohio State-Notre Dame kickoff.
