Penn State ‘Closely Monitoring’ Trump Executive Order Regarding Sponsored Research

An executive order signed by President Donald Trump may impact Penn State’s research abilities, according to an email sent to all Penn State employees obtained by Onward State. Andrew Read, senior vice president for research, said Penn State received an executive order from the Trump administration and is working to understand how that can affect the university’s research.
“We have just received an executive order related to sponsored research and are working with PIs to help them achieve compliance,” Read’s email read. “We will provide further updates as soon as we have a clearer understanding of the implications.
“As a research community, we are dedicated to creating knowledge for the greater good and to educating our students, the next generation of researchers. These Penn State values have not changed. It is our top priority to support the continuation and advancement of your work. We understand that this is a distressing time.
“Senior leadership is closely monitoring the executive orders being signed by President Trump and is working diligently to review and understand the depth and breadth of their potential impact on our research. We are committed to navigating these challenges collaboratively. Thank you for your continued commitment and excellence in your research endeavors. We will continue to assess the situation as it unfolds and will communicate as we have more information to share.”
In October 2024, Penn State reported it received a record $838 million in federal funding in the 2023-24 fiscal year, and most of its expenditures came from federal funds. At least six grants topped seven figures.
Trump’s executive orders have had an impact on the national research community. An executive order caused freezes in hiring, meetings, travel, and communications at the National Institute of Health.
