Report: Penn State Football Set To Hire Former Temple Head Coach Stan Drayton As Running Backs Coach

Penn State football is hiring former Temple head coach Stan Drayton as its new running backs coach, On3’s Pete Nakos reported Friday morning. The new hire comes five days after former running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider reportedly took the same position at Notre Dame.

Drayton has a long history of being a running backs coach in his 31-year career. Before becoming the Owls’ head coach in 2021, he was the position coach at Texas from 2017 to 2021, the Chicago Bears from 2015 to 2016, Ohio State from 2012 to 2014, and also coached at Florida, Syracuse, Tennesee, and Mississippi State.

Drayton has also coached in multiple bowl games like the Sugar Bowl in 2018, the College Football Playoff national championship in 2014, and the 2006 BCS national championship.

While at Temple from 2022 to 2024, Drayton’s first-career stint as a head coach resulted in three straight 3-9 seasons.

Drayton will acquire a running backs room that boasts one of the best running backs duos in the nation with Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. The room also has redshirt sophomore Cam Wallace, redshirt freshmen Quinton Martin Jr., and Corey Smith, along with true freshmen Tikey Hayes and Jabree Wallace-Coleman.
