An Ode To The Graveyard Shift

Ah, the graveyard shift.
Such a negative name-sounding name, yet such a fluffy task. One does not simply have a graveyard shift during THON. You must embrace it, be molded by it, and perhaps even be born in it.
While definitions are loose, if you’re working THON from midnight through the morning, you find yourself working the graveyard shift.
For rookie graveyarders, it can be scary. Once you get into it though, you realize that the late-night/early-morning shifts are all about controlled chaos. Don’t try to fight the delirium, instead embrace it. There’s no one on Earth able to defeat Father Time, after all.
Graveyard shifts are my favorite because of the laughs and the memories made over things that are not worth a laugh. Just last night, myself and some friends spent time laughing at the way someone was setting up their camera.
I’ve never set a camera up before, so didn’t even know if it was wrong. Nonetheless, we laughed.
The graveyard shift is also responsible for some of my best work. One thing delirium is really good at is making you more creative and susceptible to taking risks, like pitching crazy story ideas. If you went on our site, I am sure you can tell what was written well into the wee hours of the night.
Trust me, no one writes about jousting cleaning Zambonis or claims that Kermit the Frog has teleportation abilities unless they have been awake for way longer than medically recommended.
Along with memories, friendships are built in graveyard shifts. All of our staffers bonded the past few days attempting to out-tire the other — something you just won’t get in a lowly day shift.
