Seven Penn State Hockey Players Earn Big Ten Honors

Penn State men’s hockey was all over the Big Ten’s postseason honors released on Tuesday, with seven Nittany Lions honored.

Three Nittany Lions were named to the top two teams after Penn State landed zero in each of the past four seasons.

Sophomore forward Aiden Fink was the lone Nittany Lion named to the All-Big Ten First Team. Fink was a unanimous selection. In a spectacular season, the Calgary native scored 23 goals and 29 assists, leading the nation with 52 total points in 37 games. He was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award in January and has a shot to be named a semifinalist on Wednesday as a top-10 player in the nation. Fink is the first Nittany Lion to be named to the first team since Cole Hults and Nate Sucese in 2019-20 and is the first-ever unanimous selection in program history.

Senior defenseman Simon Mack was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team. The captain of the Nittany Lions posted career-highs in points (27), blocked shots (64), and plus-minus (plus-18). He’s the first defenseman to be named to an All-Big Ten team since Sucese in 2019-20.

Junior goaltender Arsenii Sergeev was also named to the All-Big Ten Second Team. The netminder was a star in net in his first season in Hockey Valley, going 17-8-4 with a .915 save percentage and 2.65 goals against average. He set the program record for shutouts in a season with four.

Sergeev’s impact was shown in his absence, as Penn State went just 3-5 after his injury in mid-November until his return at the Frozen Confines in January. He became the first Penn State goalie to be named to an All-Big Ten team since Eamon McAdam in 2015-16.

Sophomore forward Reese Laubach was named a Big Ten Honorable Mention. The former seventh-round pick by the San Jose Sharks in 2022 posted career highs in goals and assists, totaling 15 of each en route to his first career 30-point season.

Penn State also had a pair of players named to the All-Freshman Team in Charlie Cerrato and Cade Christenson. Prior to Aiden Fink being named last season, the Nittany Lions had not had an honoree to this team since they had three named to the 2016-17 iteration.

Cerrato caught fire late in the season, registering three goals and 12 total points in the final six games of the season, including the postseason. In total, he scored 15 goals and 22 assists for 37 total points in 35 games. He was second only to Fink in total points on the team.

Christenson only registered nine points in 36 games, but the defenseman led the Big Ten with 71 blocked shots and was tied for second on the team with a plus-minus of plus-17.

Finally, senior forward Carson Dyck was named the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.

After its overtime defeat in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals against Ohio State on Saturday, Penn State remains in consideration for an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Nittany Lions will know their fate on Sunday, March 23, and if selected, will take the ice on either March 27 or March 28 in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
