Penn State Athletics sports psychologist Dave Yukelson has died at 71, the university announced. Yukelson served as the director of sports psychology services for 30 years at Penn State’s Morgan Academic Support Center before retiring.

“Dr. Yukelson passed away peacefully, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of commitment, mentorship, and excellence in the field of applied sport psychology,” Yukelson’s obituary by the International Society in Sports Psychology read. “Born in 1954, Dr. Yukelson dedicated his life to the study and advancement of mental performance in athletics.”

Yukelson earned his bachelor’s degree in Social Psychology from the University of California, San Diego, his master’s degree in movement science from Florida State, and his Ph.D. in higher education with a specialization in sports psychology from North Texas, per his obit.

Yukelson also served as a president and fellow of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. He worked on advisory boards for USA Football and was a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Track and Field Sport Psychology Registries, according to his obit.

Yukelson is survived by his wife, Marla, and their three children, Adam, Joshua, and Drew, according to his obituary. In lieu of flowers, the Yukelson family asked that folks make donations to the Association for Applied Sport Psychology or a charity supporting student-athletes’ mental health.
