Putting 6,733 Hot Dogs Into Perspective

Penn State baseball fans love hot dogs. Onward State, frankly, loves hot dogs. Just last week, I ate 11 hot dogs in six innings of baseball myself. However, that was nothing compared to what the full crowd consumed.

On Tuesday, fans ate 6,733 hot dogs at Penn State’s game against Pitt. With folks so dedicated to hot dog consumption, we decided to put that number into perspective.

115.49 Pigs Would Have To Die

There’s very little scientific information about how many hot dogs you can get from one pig, especially since, per Nate Bargatze’s George Washington, nobody really knows what’s in a hot dog. However, according to Mill River Farm, a single pig produced 17.5 pounds of sausage, a similar product.

A single Johnsonville hot dog weighs 3.2 oz, and a single Bimbo hot dog bun weighs 1.6 oz. That means a single dog/bun combo is 0.3 pounds, so you can get 58.3 hot dogs from one pig. Divide the total number of hot dogs by the number of hot dogs in one pig, and 115.49 pigs died to feed the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park crowd on Tuesday night.

You’d Have To Eat 71,177.43 Rice Cakes To Equal The Caloric Intake

Let’s return to our friends at Johnsonville and Bimbo. Johnsonville says one of its hot dogs will cost you 260 calories, and Bimbo says one bun will cost 110 calories. Three hundred and seventy calories multiplied by 6,733 hot dogs comes out to 2,491,210 calories.

A single slightly salted rice cake from Quaker Oats will add 35 calories. Divide the number of total hot dog calories by the caloric intake of a single rice cake, and you’ll find that you’d have to eat 71,177.43 to eat as many calories as baseball fans ate on Tuesday.

It Would Take 2,319.52 Hours To Eat All The Hot Dogs At One Per Inning

Most everyone has heard of the nine for nine challenge, where a baseball fan eats one hot dog for each inning of a baseball game. Well, for fans hoping to watch an infinite baseball game and compete in the 6,733 for 6,733 challenge, that’s a little tougher.

Tuesday’s loss against Pitt lasted three hours and six minutes. That’s an average of 20.67 minutes per inning. Multiply that by 6,733 hot dogs/innings, and you get 139,171.11 minutes, or 2,319.52 hours. Let’s just hope that Penn State has a deep bullpen for that one, folks.

You’d Have To Run 14,654.18 Miles To Burn Off The Calories

Obviously, the answer to this question will change depending on each person and their genetics. However, the author of this post weighs about 180 pounds, so I’ll use myself as an example.

A 180-pound person should burn about 170 calories per mile, per Health. We’ve already established that there are 2,491,210 calories in all those hot dogs, so it would take me 14,654.18 miles to burn off those calories. That’s about one trip to Beijing, back, and then a quick jog to Omaha, Nebraska, to watch Penn State in the College World Series.

You Could Line The Hot Dogs Up To North Halls

According to Hot Dog Chicago Style, a normal hot dog weighs 6 inches, which is a really, really, really long length.

With Penn State’s hot dogs totalling 3,366.5 feet, you could roughly line the hot dogs up from home plate at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to North Halls.
