Penn State Athletics To Cut Basketball Programs Following 2025-26 Season

Penn State Athletics announced Tuesday it will cut its men’s and women’s basketball programs after the 2025-26 season.

The programs will be given one more season to change the mind of Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Pat Kraft.

Last season, Penn State men’s basketball went 16-15 and 6-14 in the Big Ten, finishing second to last in the second year of the Mike Rhoades era. The Lady Lions went 10-19 and finished last in the conference with a 1-17 record under Carolyn Kieger.

“These guys are just unsalvageable,” Kraft told Onward State. “We honestly felt bad for the programs’ fans and wanted to save them from watching Penn State basketball.”

Penn State athletics will use the money saved from cutting basketball to fund its $700 million Beaver Stadium renovation project.

Should the university advance with the program cuts, Penn State’s wrestling and volleyball teams will move into the Bryce Jordan Center. Both programs are coming off national championships this winter.
