No Refund Theatre Presents: ‘Dogfight’

The school year is coming to a close, and No Refund Theatre is ending it with a bang.

Its new production, “Dogfight,” is a musical based on the film of the same name, with music and lyrics written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and book by Peter Duchan. NRT’s rendition was directed by Hannah Flade and Charlie Plante. The pair led one of the biggest NRT teams yet: a cast of 13 students and 10 more behind the scenes.

It’s 1963, and a group of hot-headed Marines is preparing to ship out to the war. They’re loud, brash, and more than half of their vocabulary is made up of colorful curse words. The day before they leave, the jarheads have a party and competition — whoever brings the ugliest date wins the pot. A noble act for our country’s heroes.

Eddie Birdlace, played by Ethan Leicht, settles on an awkward girl he meets in a diner. This girl, Rose — portrayed by Hannah Recchiuti Quier — is ecstatic to go, thinking that a nice guy is taking her on her first date.

What follows would probably be considered spoilers, so I won’t ruin the experience for any potential audience members. But, I will say, it’s a wonderful show, full of ups and downs, and definitely worth the watch.

Under music director Samantha Wong, the cast brings each number to life with apparent ease. From full cast jams to intimate ballads between the leads, the cast makes it easy to catch yourself swaying in your seat. Even the party scene, with the extra-groovy lounge singer Cale Blakely, is a vibe.

“Dogfight” premieres at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, and will run until April 26.
