Penn State Men’s Hockey Head Coach Guy Gadowsky Tabbed To Lead College Hockey’s Spengler Cup Team

Penn State men’s hockey head coach Guy Gadowsky was selected to lead the United States Collegiate Select hockey team in the Spengler Cup, the tournament announced on Thursday.

The Spengler Cup is an international hockey tournament held annually in Davos, Switzerland. The tournament is in its 97th year and runs on an invitation basis. Typically, Europe’s most prestigious clubs and national teams occupy the majority of the spots.

Gadowsky was selected to be the head coach of the inaugural team; fellow NCAA head coaches Mike Souza of UNH and Jason Lammers of Niagara University will be assistant coaches.

“We are proud to unveil the coaching staff for this year’s Spengler Cup team,” USCS GM Steve Metcalf said. “Guy Gadowsky will serve as the head coach. His vision for bringing a college team to the prestigious Spengler Cup made him the clear choice to lead this effort.

The collegiate selects will be the first college team to compete in the Spengler Cup and will consist of players from all six NCAA Division I conferences and independent programs. Other teams prepared to make the trip are Team Canada, Sparta Praha, and HC Fribourg-Gotteron.

“It’s an honor to be on the inaugural staff of the US Collegiate Selects and to be competing in such a prestigious tournament,” Gadowsky said. “The Spengler Cup will provide an incredible experience for the players selected and will be great for the continued exposure of college hockey outside of the United States.”

The Nittany Lions head coach has spent the last 14 seasons in Happy Valley, where he has built the program from scratch. In the 2024 season, Gadowsky helped Penn State reach its first-ever Frozen Four in one of the most successful seasons to date.

Before joining the Nittany Lions, Gadowsky spent time with Princeton from 2004 to 2011 and the University of Alaska Fairbanks from 1999 to 2004
