Izzy Starck Stepping Away From Volleyball For Season To Prioritize Mental Health

Penn State women’s volleyball star setter Izzy Starck is stepping away from volleyball for the remainder of the season to prioritize her mental health, she announced via Instagram Friday night.

The announcement came shortly after first serve of the No. 5 Nittany Lions’ match with the No. 4 Kentucky Wildcats. Saint Louis transfer setter Addie Lyon got the start in Starck’s place.

“This has not been an easy choice, but it is one that I believe is necessary for my overall well-being. Over the past several months, I’ve been facing challenges that have taken a toll on me mentally and emotionally,” Starck wrote.

“I recognize that I need to take a step back and focus on getting the help and care I need at this time,” she continued. “This is not goodbye forever, it’s simply a pause to focus on health and growth.”

Starck appeared in each of Penn State’s first four matches of the season, leading the team with 170 total assists.

Last season as a freshman, Starck led the NCAA with 1,483 assists and was named both the Big Ten and AVCA National Freshman of the Year.
