No. 6 Penn State Women’s Hockey Tops Delaware 7-0

Penn State women’s hockey (6-0-0) had a two-game series with Delaware (1-5-0) this week. Penn State won 5-0 on Friday evening, in a standout performance that included a Grace Outwater hat-trick. Saturday afternoon, the Nittany Lions dominated the Blue Hens once again, beating them 7-0. Penn State is now 6-0 to begin the season.

Penn State was without its captain, Tessa Janecke, and senior goaltender Katie DeSa in Saturday’s matchup against Delaware. Freshman goaltender Maddy Campbell earned her first collegiate start.

How It Happened

Two minutes into the first, Delaware’s Billi Roman went to the box for tripping. Penn State managed a few good looks, but the Blue Hens managed to kill it off. Delaware also went to the power play 11 minutes into the first, but Penn State drew a penalty quickly, putting the teams at four-on-four. The first period was scoreless, but the Nittany Lions dominated play, with 23 shots to Delaware’s zero.

Two minutes into the second period, Penn State’s Maddy Christian scored the first goal of the night shorthanded. Christian grabbed a loose puck at the blue line and skated into the Blue Hen’s defensive zone, roofing the puck just over the glove of Delaware’s goaltender, Mattie Robitzer. Christian had led the league in shorthanded goals last season and added her first of the year Saturday.

One minute and 20 seconds later, Kendall Butze made a pass from the point to Penn State’s Danica Maynard, who skated to the top of the faceoff circle and put one in the top corner against Robitzer, giving the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead with the first goal of her collegiate career.

Penn State was able to kill off a Blue Hens power play with seven minutes remaining, still holding the opposition to zero shots. By the end of the second period, the Nittany Lions held 38 shots to the Blue Hens’ zero.

Three minutes into the third period, Danica Maynard added another with a shot through traffic at Delaware’s blue line that beat Robitzer, who never had a chance to see it due to a screen in front. Maynard’s second of the night gave Penn State a 3-0 lead.

The Nittany Lions scored once again with eleven minutes left in the third period. Sophie Morrow shot the puck from the blue line, and it bounced off the skate of Abby Stonehouse, landing perfectly on the stick of Nicole Hall, who had a wide-open net and tallied Penn State’s fourth goal of the night.

Twenty-four seconds after the Nittany Lions’ last goal, Danica Maynard made a perfect pass to a wide-open Matilde Fantin in the slot, who buried the shot past Robitzer point-blank, making it 5-0 Nittany Lions.

Fantin scored again with six minutes to play in the third. Taking advantage of a Blue Hen’s turnover at the faceoff dot, Fantin roofed a shot behind the net for a beautiful goal, giving Penn State the 6-0 lead.

A minute later, Maddy Christian added another tally off a perfect back-door pass from Danica Maynard. The assist gave Maynard her fourth point of the night, and put Penn State up 7-0.

The Nittany Lions finished their dominant night, beating Delaware 7-0. Maddy Campbell earned her first shutout in her first collegiate game, facing just one shot from the Blue Hens.
