Penn State Women’s Soccer Plays Oregon To A 2-2 Draw

Penn State women’s soccer (7-5-3, 3-3-2 Big Ten) played Oregon (2-9-4, 0-5-4 Big Ten) to a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field in State College.
The bulk of the action occurred early, as both teams had scored a goal within the first ten minutes. Oregon scored what would be the game-winning goal in the 25th minute and would nearly hold on for its first conference win before an 87th-minute penalty kick by Bella Ayscue secured a tie for Penn State.
How It Happened
Oregon got early possession and was able to get into the box early, but missed a centering pass for a shot on net. Penn State flipped it around quickly and threatened deep in the box, but the strong Oregon defense blocked any attempt to get it towards the net.
In the fifth minute, Oregon’s Miya Alamares took it up the left side and delivered a beautiful centering pass that was headed into the back of the net by Carly Cormack for a 1-0 Oregon lead. It’s Cormack’s second goal of the season.
Facing a sudden deficit, the Nittany Lions got more aggressive in the Oregon end. A strong shot by Amelia White from the top of the penalty box was stopped by Oregon goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein. Still, the ball trickled away with her out of position, allowing Riley Gleason to set up Julia Raich for a game-tying goal in the eighth minute, her fourth of the season. Gleason picked up her team-high tenth assist of the year.
Oregon got the first corner kick of the game after a shot by Addisen Boyer was blocked out by goalkeeper Mackenzie Gress. After an off-target shot, Penn State went the other way and got a favorable free kick in the 12th minute, but one that went straight to Goldstein.
In the 18th minute, a long pass in led to a shot on net by Alamares, but right into the chest of Gress for her second save. Penn State was awarded a corner kick in the 20th minute and a second one a few seconds later after a header got subsequently deflected out of play.
A big opportunity was just missed in the 23rd minute, as Raich burst up the left side and delivered a pass to lead Riley Cross for a 1-on-1 in front of the net, but Goldstein ran out to the edge of the box to smother it before she could get there.
A chance for Oregon saw Alamares get another shot blocked in the 24th minute. Just a minute later, an over-aggressive pursuit by Goldstein gave Lilly Burger a wide-open chance at an awkward angle, but she shot it wide. The missed opportunity proved costly, as Oregon immediately turned it into a chance of their own when Cormack fired a shot off of Gress that trickled into the back of the net for a go-ahead goal in the 25th minute.
Goldstein was shaken up in the 27th minute after making another dive at a loose ball that trickled in after an Oregon giveaway, but she stayed in after a long stoppage. Penn State got its third corner kick in the 30th minute, but headed it wide of the net. They got another in the 32nd minute, but it once again resulted in nothing but a goal kick.
Persistent pressure continued in the Oregon end, but Oregon defenders blocked shot after shot. One shot by Cross went wide right, while another shot in the 38th minute by Kennedy Ring went just over the top of the net. In the 40th minute, a shot from a bad angle went off the hands of Goldstein, off the post, and out of play for a Penn State corner, but none of their headers were finding paydirt.
In the final ten seconds of the half, Kaelyn Wolf fired a shot well over the net, sending Penn State into the half with a 2-1 deficit.
The first ten minutes of the second half saw both teams get opportunities in the box, but neither seriously threatened the goalkeeper. Penn State got a 55th-minute corner, but that only resulted in a long kick by Cross, who tried to set up a header, but it was grabbed by Goldstein.
A header by Molly Martin off a 59th-minute free kick trickled past Goldstein, but she was able to stop it before it crossed the goal line. In the next two minutes, White had a shot that missed the net, and a centering pass couldn’t find a target, as Penn State got closer and closer to an equalizer. Cross airmailed a clean look inside the box in the 62nd minute.
After the start of the second half was all Penn State. Oregon threatened for a third goal repeatedly, but never got a shot on net as the minutes continued to bleed off the clock. The momentum flipped again, with Burger having a big chance blocked in the 76th minute for Penn State, forcing another corner kick. Despite possessing the ball in deep, Oregon kept breaking up big passes, and shots couldn’t find the net, with a shot by Kaitlyn MacBean going wide in the 77th minute.
Penn State got another corner kick in the 80th minute, but Oregon headed it away. A big foul by Oregon’s Selah Simms set up Raich for a free kick above the box in the 82nd minute, but it was blocked.
Play stopped in the 86th minute after a scary collision saw players from both teams collide going for a header, with Oregon’s Jasmine Young getting the worst of it and leaving the match.
In the 87th minute, Simms made a slide tackle that took out the legs of Ayscue, who drew a penalty kick. Simms was awarded a yellow card, and Ayscue gained a golden opportunity to tie the score, which she did not take for granted. She buried a game-tying goal in the final minutes, her second of the season, to secure the tie.
Neither team seriously threatened in the final three minutes and both teams walked away from Jeffrey Field with a point in the standings.
