Penn State Football Heavy Underdogs Against Ohio State In Week 10

It’s Ohio State week, folks.

This week’s matchup will feel different compared to past showdowns. At the beginning of the season, this rivalry matchup was expected to be a highly anticipated showdown between two national championship contenders. Now, due to all the changes with Penn State football, this matchup has become a showdown between a national championship contender and a team that is in transition.

After having its second bye week and losing its fourth consecutive game against Iowa, Penn State football is facing its largest underdog spread since 2013, as it travels to Columbus, Ohio, to face the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes at noon on Saturday, November 1. This is the fourth consecutive year that this matchup is scheduled for noon on FOX.

The opening line against Ohio State has been set at -20.5 points in the Buckeyes’ favor, with the over/under listed at 43.5 points, according to DraftKings. The moneyline is in favor of Ohio State at -1450. Penn State sits at +850. This is the second straight game this season that Penn State is an underdog.

Despite losing to Iowa, the Nittany Lions covered the spread for the first time this season after failing to do so in their first six games. Now, interim head coach Terry Smith and his squad will look to shock the world against the Buckeyes to stay on track for a bowl game this season.

This game is a recipe for disaster for the blue and white. They are heading to one of the most hostile environments in college football to play the best team in the country, especially with backup quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer. He struggled in his first start, and while he and the rest of the team looked inspired against Iowa and should play better after their second bye week, Ohio State is the defending champion for a reason. With the home-field advantage, it might be too much for the Nittany Lions to overcome.

As for Ohio State, it is 6-0-1 against the spread this season. The Buckeyes are 5-0 against the spread in their last five games against an opponent in the Big Ten and straight up in their previous five home games, according to OddsShark. It is the number one team in the country and has beaten all its opponents by seven or more points.

A big reason for that has been its defense, which is ranked No. 1 this season. They have only allowed 5.86 points, including 0.43 points in the first quarter, according to OddsShark. Ohio State’s defense, combined with its offense, might make life difficult for Penn State, and this game could be headed for a blowout.
