No. 6 Penn State Women’s Hockey Defeats Robert Morris 3-0 In Conference Matchup

No. 6 Penn State women’s hockey (11-0-0, 7-0-0 AHA) took down Robert Morris (5-6-0, 3-2-0 AHA) 3-0 at Clearview Arena on Friday afternoon.

Grace Outwater, Katelyn Roberts, and Mikah Keller each found the back of the net, while Katie DeSa recorded another shutout to keep the Nittany Lions undefeated.

How It Happened

Tessa Janecke won the opening draw for the Nittany Lions, getting things going. Robert Morris fired off a few early chances, forcing Penn State goalie DeSa to make saves on Taylor Storey and Aliana Giampietro.

The Nittany Lions responded midway through the first period with a flurry of shots from Kendall Butze, Leah Stecker, and Danica Maynard, but Colonials goalie Maggie Hatch turned aside the opportunities.

Penn State earned the game’s first power play after Catriona Craer was called for tripping with 5:56 to go. Janecke and Stecker both generated good looks on the man advantage, but Hatch stood tall between the pipes.

Despite controlling possession for much of the period, the Nittany Lions couldn’t find the back of the net before the end of the first.

The early pressure finally paid off when Outwater opened the scoring with a goal at 1:08 of the second period, giving the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.

Just over ten minutes later, Penn State looked to capitalize on a second power play opportunity after Laura Eustace was called for hooking. Roberts buried a feed from Janecke and Butze at 17:21. The goal was Roberts’ sixth of the season and extended the lead to 2-0 heading into the third period.

Outwater picked up right where she left off, setting up Keller for a Nittany Lion goal 6:11 into the third period. Robert Morris tried to respond late, pulling its goalie for the extra attacker, but DeSa continued to stand tall in the net.

The Nittany Lions closed out the final minutes to secure the 3-0 shutout victory.

Takeaways

  • Outwater led the way offensively for the Nittany Lions, recording a goal and an assist in the game.
  • DeSa secured yet another shutout win, turning aside all 15 shots she faced.
  • Penn State’s power play clicked once again, converting in the second period to build on its special teams chances.
