Penn State Women’s Hockey Sweeps AHA Monthly Awards

Penn State women’s hockey continues to bring in the accolades. The sixth-ranked Nittany Lions have taken home all four of the monthly AHA league awards for the first time in program history.

Atlantic Hockey America named Tessa Janecke Forward of the Month, Danica Maynard Defenseman of the Month, Katie DeSa Goaltender of the Month, and Matilde Fantin Freshman of the Month, the conference announced on Monday.

Janecke was unstoppable all month for the blue and white. The senior received a Forward of the Week honor for the seventh time in her career, along with registering eight goals and eight assists in the nine games played this month. The captain currently leads the entire AHA in points despite missing two games. So far, she’s had at least a point in every game.

Maynard has been on another level this year as well. The freshman is second on the team in points and is first in the nation in points among freshman defenseman. The freshman native was named the AHA Defenseman of the Week twice this month and leads the conference in assists.

DeSa has been tabbed the Goaltender of the Month for the fourth time in her career. The senior tallied four shutouts this month and leads all goalies in the conference in minutes. She has been named Goaltender of the Week twice so far this year and is a commanding 9-0-0 on the year.

Fantin received her first Freshman of the Month award after winning two weekly awards so far this season. She is one of just three rookies to average a point per game. The Como, Italy, native is also sixth in the nation in points among freshmen.

The Nittany Lions’ talented roster has led to success on the ice. They currently stand at No. 6 in the USCHO poll and are one of only two undefeated ranked teams.

The Nittany Lions look to stay undefeated against Syracuse in a two-game series starting at 2 p.m. Friday, November 14, at Pegula Ice Arena.
