Penn State Women’s Soccer To Open NCAA Tournament Against Army

It’s time to go dancing, folks.
After Penn State women’s soccer lost to UCLA for the second consecutive year in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament, its season is not over yet, as it will play in its 31st consecutive NCAA Tournament when it takes on No. 9-seeded Army in the first round. The teams will play each other at Jeffrey Field on Saturday, November 15, at 5 p.m. The winner of this matchup will take on the winner of No. 16-seeded High Point or No. 1-seeded Virginia.
This season, Army finished with a record of 14-5-2 and earned an automatic spot in the tournament by winning the Patriot League. The last time Penn State and Army faced each other was in 2011, when the Nittany Lions beat the Black Knights 1-0.
The Nittany Lions earned a No. 8 seed as an at-large selection in the Virginia regional. With this selection, they have extended their streak of consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament to 31, dating back to 1995. It continues to be the second-longest streak in NCAA soccer history.
In last year’s edition of the NCAA Tournament, the Nittany Lions fell for a second straight year in the Elite Eight when they lost 2-1 to the eventual champion, North Carolina.
Penn State finished the regular season 9-7-3 and 5-4-2 in the Big Ten. This was the first time in Penn State history that it didn’t win 10 or more games in a regular season. It started the season as the No. 11 team in the country and finished unranked, beating only one ranked opponent in the regular season. However, it did enough this season to clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament and will host its 14th opening-round match in the past 15 seasons.
The Nittany Lions are 24-3 in first-round matches in the NCAA tournament. They will look to go on a run and win their second national championship in history since 2015, when Penn State defeated Duke 1-0.
