[Photo Story] Penn State Women’s & Men’s Hockey Back At Pegula Ice Arena

After a bye week for the Penn State women’s hockey team and a disappointing series against Michigan State for the men’s hockey team, both squads were back at Pegula Ice Arena. This time, No. 5 Penn State men’s hockey faced No. 2 Michigan, while No. 6 women’s hockey took on Syracuse.
Our photographers were, of course, at Pegula to capture all the action, so let’s take a look at how it went.
Friday, November 14
The women’s and men’s teams had very different games on Friday.

The Nittany Lions fought hard from start to finish.

The women’s team dominated Syracuse in its first game back in Pegula with a 7–0 win. A majority of the goals came in the third period, with Tessa Janecke, Katelyn Roberts, Matilde Fantin, Danica Maynard, and Maddy Christian all recording multi-point games. The Nittany Lions also dominated shots on net, outshooting Syracuse 43–14.

The men’s team, on the other hand, didn’t fare as well. Shea Van Olm scored the lone goal for Penn State. In a rough game for the Nittany Lions, Van Olm’s score was the bright spot. They fell to Michigan 1-7.

Saturday, November 15
Saturday was a better day for hockey in Happy Valley, with wins from both teams.

Both teams fought hard once again. The women’s team put up more than 40 shots on goal, while the men recorded more than 30.

The women’s team once again dominated Syracuse. The Nittany Lions were able to score 11 goals on the Orange, finishing the weekend with an 18-goal series sweep.

The men’s team rebounded on Saturday. After a disastrous opening period on Friday night, Penn State outplayed Michigan in Saturday’s first period. The Nittany Lions had not held a lead at any point during their three-game losing streak, but led for most of Saturday’s matchup. The game was also their THON Teddy Bear Toss night. Penn State went on to win 4–2 to split the series.

Both teams’ next games will be on the road. Penn State women’s hockey will hit the ice again against RIT at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 21. Penn State men’s hockey will face Minnesota at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 21.
