[Photo Story] Penn State Men’s & Women’s Basketball Continue To Roll

Penn State men’s and women’s basketball continue to roll, picking up four total wins this past week, keeping their short, but undefeated seasons alive.

Men’s basketball picked up two wins last week, one against Navy at the Bryce Jordan Center and the other against La Salle at Xfinity Mobile Arena in South Philadelphia.

The Lady Lions similarly picked up two wins last week, one against Coppin State at Rec Hall and the other against Saint Joseph’s at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia.

Below is a compilation of the best pictures from this past week of the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Tuesday, November 12

To start the strong week, the Nittany Lions faced off against the Midshipmen from Navy at the Bryce Jordan Center. Navy kept it close throughout the game, but Penn State ultimately won 80-71 off of good performances from freshmen Kayden Mingo and Melih Tunca.

Wednesday, November 13

The Lady Lions, in their third game of the season, would match up against Coppin State at Rec Hall. Coppin State would keep this game scarily close through the first half, but the Lady Lions would figure it out in the 2nd half, outscoring the Eagles 33-14 in the 3rd quarter, leading to a 90-62 win.

Kiyomi McMiller, the four-star sophomore transfer from Rutgers, continues her dominant run on the court, scoring 21 points against Coppin State, along with nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals. This season, she is averaging 20 points a game, ranking her fourth in the Big Ten. Gracie Merkle, the 6’6″ junior center, has also been on a dominant run, scoring 15 points with eight rebounds and three assists in the game. She nearly averages a double-double a game, averaging 19.5 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game.

Saturday, November 15

Men’s basketball traveled to Philadelphia for the fourth game of the year against the La Salle Explorers. Penn State would jump out to a big lead midway through the first half and would control that lead for the remainder of the game, taking home the win 83-69. Tunca and Mingo once again lead the game in points, scoring 20 and 14, respectively. The Nittany Lions’ next game will occur on Wednesday, November 19, at 6:30 p.m., when they will host Harvard at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Sunday, November 16

Women’s basketball also traveled to Philadelphia for its fourth game of the year against the Saint Joseph’s Hawks. The game would remain relatively close throughout, but the Lady Lions would ultimately come out on top, winning 89-78. Merkle and McMiller would both finish with double-doubles in points and rebounds, as well as a career-high 23-point game from freshman guard Tea Cleante. The Lady Lions will travel to Nassau, Bahamas, for their next game against Princeton in the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament on Saturday, November 22.
