Penn State References You Didn’t Catch In ‘Wicked: For Good’

The second part of the two-part Wicked series, called ‘Wicked: For Good’, was released in theaters on November 21. The film continues the story of Elphaba and Glinda, directed by Jon M. Chu, and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

If you have seen the movie and think this was just a touching story about friendship, magic, and defying gravity, think again. Hidden so deep in the film (so deep that the writers may not even know), this new piece is absolutely packed with Penn State references.

Here are some Penn State references we found in the songs of ‘Wicked: For Good’.

‘Every Day More Wicked’ – Save Us From Pat Kraft

“Save us from the wicked.”

As Penn State enters month two without a head coach, Pat Kraft still hasn’t bagged the team a “big name” coach as promised. At this point, can anyone save us? Seriously.

‘Thank Goodness’ – Going To Class Straight Out Of Bed And Seeing Every Single Person You Know

“He couldn’t look handsomer, I couldn’t feel humbler.”

On those “roll out of bed and show up to class” days, you can bet you’ll run into everyone you know. It doesn’t matter that this campus has 40,000+ students. You will run into all of your friends, coworkers, exes, situationships, and professors. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles.

‘No Place Like Home’ – Failing An Exam

“When you want to leave, discouraged and resigned, that’s what they want you to do, but think how you will grieve, for all you leave behind.”

Picture yourself walking out of Pollock Testing Center after bombing an exam. Cursing at the world, shedding a few tears, and even threatening to drop out. No matter how discouraged you feel, imagine all of the experiences and opportunities you wouldn’t have gotten without Happy Valley.

‘The Wicked Witch of the East’ – Love Lives Of Most Students

“Alone and loveless here.”

No explanation needed. Next.

‘Wonderful’ – Delusional Penn State Football Fans

“Facts and logic won’t unchoke ’em, they’ll go on believing what they want to, show them exactly what’s the score.”

No matter the statistics or scores, loyal Penn State Football fans will never back down when supporting their team. Record: 6-6. Rank: questionable. Confidence: delusionally high. And honestly? That’s what keeps this place running.

‘As Long As You’re Mine’ – Sleeping Through Classes After A Night Out

“I’ll wake up my body and make up for lost time.”

The absolute worst? Waking up to realize you slept through your alarms and missed class. But just when you think the morning can’t get any more terrible? Here comes a pounding headache, the urge to vomit, and major hangxiety from last night’s adventures at Champs and Frat Row.

‘No Good Deed’ – Showing Up To The Exam With No Hope

“I don’t even know what I’m reading, I don’t even know what trick I ought to try”

We all have had those exams that are just a lost cause. Reading the instructions might as well be reading another language. Process of elimination seems impossible. Suddenly you remember the nights you skipped studying, telling yourself, “It’s just common sense”. All you want in that moment is a time machine to actually hit the books.

‘March of the Witch Hunters’ – Personal Attacks From The Willard Preacher

“He wouldn’t be a coward, today.”

One thing you may not know about the movie is that the Cowardly Lion was actually based on the Willard Preacher. When the Oz gives him courage, the Cowardly Lion (aka the Willard Preacher) doesn’t roar, but immediately calls out every student that walks by and begins a full sermon.

‘The Girl in the Bubble’ – For The Glory

“Full of magic and glory and love.”

Since writer Stephen Schwartz couldn’t legally include Penn State classics in the film, he added some Penn State easter eggs throughout the soundtrack. One of the most recognizable easter eggs is the reference to the Alma Mater in ‘The Girl in the Bubble’. Glory = “For the glory of Old State”. Love = “To one heart that loves thy name”. When you think about it, Ariana Grande is basically singing the Alma Mater.

‘For Good’- The ‘We’re In This Together’ Classmate

“And we are led, to those who help us most to grow”

Every semester, there’s that one person in your class you become weirdly close with. They become your go-to for exam preparation and homework answers. They never quite become a friend outside of class, but in the classroom, they are your lifeline and academic soulmate. You would’ve never passed the class without them.
