Former Penn State Football Running Backs Coach Charles Huff Hired As Memphis Head Football Coach

Another former Penn State assistant coach is on the move.

Former Penn State running backs coach Charles Huff has agreed to become the next head coach at Memphis, the team announced on Monday. He succeeds Ryan Silverfield in the role after Silverfield left to become the head coach at Arkansas.

Huff coached the running backs at Penn State from 2014-17, coaching future NFL draft picks Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders, while also being the special teams coordinator. He joined Penn State after previously working under former head coach James Franklin as an offensive quality control coach at Vanderbilt in 2011 and as an assistant offensive line coach while Franklin was Maryland’s offensive coordinator in 2009.

After Barkley went to the NFL in 2017, Huff left to become an assistant head coach and run game coordinator at Mississippi State before joining Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama in 2019 in a similar role.

After winning a national championship as an assistant, Huff took the head coaching job at Marshall in 2021 and went 32-20 in four years, winning a Conference USA title in 2024. He took the same job at Southern Mississippi in 2025 and went 7-5, winning five games in the Sun Belt.

Huff will take over for a Memphis program that last won an American title in 2019 and has been competitive in the half-decade since, going 8-4 in 2025.
