Penn State Men’s Hockey’s Gavin McKenna’s World Juniors Hat Trick-Sealing Goal Earns No. 9 Play On SportsCenter Top 10

Gavin McKenna is off to a blisteringly hot start to World Juniors, folks.

After tallying a pair of assists in each of Team Canada’s first two games in group play, Penn State men’s hockey’s freshman phenom exploded for a hat trick in the third game against Denmark on Monday. His third goal of the game earned him a spot on the SportsCenter Top 10 Plays list, coming in at No. 9 on this silky smooth move to beat Danish goaltender Patrick Tiedjen early in the third period.

McKenna scored his first goal just over three minutes into the game on the power play, opening the scoring on a snapshot from the right faceoff circle. His second goal came with five minutes to go in the second period from a similar spot to make it 5-1 Canada.

He leads all skaters across the tournament with seven points in three games, also tallying a solid plus-four. McKenna and the rest of Team Canada are back in action against Finland at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, to close out group play.

Penn State men’s hockey returns from its six-week holiday break on the road against RIT at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 3.
