Former Iowa State Linebacker Kooper Ebel Transfers To Penn State Football

Three-star senior linebacker Kooper Ebel is transferring to Penn State, he announced on X on Sunday. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

Ebel was a three-star recruit out of high school, signing with Iowa State out of Hartley, Iowa, as part of the Class of 2023, being ranked as the No. 12 player from Iowa, according to the 247Sports Composite. He committed in June 2022, choosing the Cyclones over Nebraska and Iowa, among others.

Despite not getting much playing time right away, Ebel burned his redshirt as a true freshman, mostly contributing on special teams. He moved into a starting role in 2024 and he’s been a stalwart in the middle of the defense since, tallying 146 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, two sacks, three passes defended, and a forced fumble across 26 games over the past two seasons.

Ebel enters a linebacker room with a lot of moving parts. Incumbent linebackers Amare Campbell, Keon Wylie, and Dominic DeLuca are leaving the program, while Tony Rojas and Alex Tatsch are staying and figure to have big roles. The 6-4, 235-pounder will be heading to Penn State alongside Iowa State teammates Caleb Bacon and Cael Brezina, who will make up a big part of new linebackers coach Tyson Veidt.

As of Sunday night, Penn State has already earned the commitment of 14 ex-Iowa State players, including quarterback Rocco Becht, tight end Benjamin Brahmer, and safety Marcus Neal Jr.
